Persecution of Baha’is – watch this video!

by Barney on 16 August 2008

The wonderful MideastYouth.com people have released this powerful video, (under the title Persepolis 2:Safeguard the Innocent. It calls on Iranians of whatever faith or none, to rise up and protest against the persecution of the Bahá’ís in Iran.

Much has been said and written on the persecution of the Baha’i minority in Iran, but in these dark days, and as troubling news continues to emerge, it is time to rise up and proclaim, enough! Whether it is justified by religion, or hidden under the guise of nationalism, or instigated by prejudice, religious intolerance is a plague that threatens the fabric of our societies. It is our moral obligation to not sit by silently as our fellow brothers and sisters are murdered, imprisoned and denied their rights as citizens due to their personal beliefs.

What can you do?

Everyone can do something. MideastYouth.com suggests that its readers could, amongst other things:

Spread the word:

  • Promote this clip by sharing it with your friends, colleagues, and on social networks.
  • Stay aware of human rights abuses against this innocent minority.

Learn more about the Bahá’í Faith

They also suggest that those in Iran should:

  • Learn more about the faith, and be aware that the IRI and officials of other countries like Egypt have launched massive propaganda campaigns against them.
  • Reach out to Baha’is, and keep an open mind.

I think these activities are equally important for people everywhere. Get to know your local Bahá’ís.

There are other suggestions on the MideastYouth.com website. You’ll need to give careful consideration to what you can effectively do.

And MideastYouth.com makes the very good point that you don’t have to believe in the Bahá’í Faith to take any of these actions. What the Bahá’ís in Iran seek is to have their human and civil rights as citizens of Iran respected and to be free to practise their faith unhindered.

What are you waiting for?

Do you support freedom of thought, conscience and religion? Do you value freedom of expression? The persecution of the Bahá’ís in Iran gets worse by the day. Please make your concerns about these human rights abuses in Iran known. Pass the message on.

This is indeed a thought-provoking video. Hits just the right note – not sensationalist or gory, but shows exactly what is going on.

Hi, Tess. Yes, I thought it hit the right note, too. It’s difficult to portray such things without going over the top, and I think they’ve managed it well.
