The London Eye from above

Did you know that at the peak of the working day Britons send more than 5,000 text messages per second? Or that between 7 and 10am every working day, 36 million Britons are on the move commuting to the office or school? Or that the average road user in Britain will spend more than 6 months of their life stuck in traffic jams?

These fascinating facts and a great deal else were revealed in an excellent new series that started last night on BBC Television.

Britain from Above is a fascinating look by Andrew Marr at life in Britain in a way that most of us would never have the chance to see it.

And it’s not just a TV series, but there’s a high quality interactive website which is an integral part of the series.

Here’s Andrew Marr on what excited him about the series:

I highly recommend a visit to the website. And do watch the series on TV, if you can.

As one of the 300 strong audience last Friday evening at the Arts Academy (sitting in the second row) I found it impossible to detect any nervousness or uncertainty on the part of the Wildfire group who performed the brilliant musical narrative – the story of Eduardo Duarte Viera, the first African Bahá’í martyr. It is a story, I would suggest, that few of the audience had heard before. It was moving because it is indeed a tragic story. Moving because of the spiritual blindness of those in his company. Moving because of the boldness and sincerity of the Wildfire group to perform what was obviously a difficult piece of drama involving as it did, piano, violin, song and narrative, with little time for rehearsal and the daunting fact that it was a more serious act than most others on Friday evening which included some great entertainment – dance, singing by the choir, folk songs and some brilliant comedy.

Coming back to earth on Sunday evening I also watched “Britain from Above”. Indeed a very interesting and fascinating BBC TV programme.
