Baha’i is one of Beijing’s “It-couple”

by Barney on 2 August 2008

With Beijing in the news because of the Olympics, I was fascinated to read this article in The Times online yesterday about Zhang Xin and Pan Shiyi, headlined as “Beijing’s It-couple”. According to the article slug:

Zhang Xin and Pan Shiyi are the It-couple of Beijing: property tycoons who made a fortune at dizzying speed – and whose futuristic designs are reshaping their city.

And:

Zhang and Pan are frequent speakers at international conferences such as the World Economic Forum in Davos. Zhang, chief executive of SOHO China, of which Pan is chairman, was selected as one of the “Ten Women to Watch in Asia” by the Wall Street Journal.

Interestingly:

They are not very social: “My kids are my priority,” she says. Their lives rotate around work, family and, increasingly, a search for spiritual values. She became a Baha’i two years ago; Pan is a Taoist who is “still exploring”, Zhang says. She is arguably the more worldly.

There’s no doubt that China is changing fast – and not just in economic terms.
