Identity Crises: the Baha’i quagmire in Egypt

by Barney on 11 June 2007

This is a promo video for a film by Ahmed Ezzat about the the dilemma faced by the Baha’is in Egypt, who are legally required to have ID cards but who are denied them by the Egyptian authorities because they will not claim to be Muslims, Jews or Christians – the only three religious categories allowed under the Egyptian ID card system.

A really nicely put together promo (can’t wait to see the whole thing) but the only thing that isn’t made clear in this promo as to who is a Baha’i and who isn’t.

For example to western eyes the Baha’is and the man who says “Death to the Infidels” look just as “foreign” as each other – and viewers might come away with the feeling not that there oppression against Baha’is but that the Baha’is are also radicals…?

I don’t know if the film is out yet.

I agree with Alex that the promo could be confusing to western eyes. I don’t know whether the intended audience is western or Egyptian, but I hope (and assume )the finished product will indicate clearly who’s who.
