Now that I’m 59…

…I don’t feel any older, but I can’t quite believe that I’m almost 60.

We had an excellent family get-together on 27 December to celebrate two birthdays, mine and Jacob’s.

Grandma, Great Grandpa and Mummy admire Jake's prowess with the abacus

This time last year Jakey was an utterly helpless baby. Now, one year on, he’s an active, bright, rather mischievous little boy, just beginning to walk and with the very early signs of language. I had forgotten just how much development goes on in a child’s first year.

As for me, I’m heading towards the other end of life on this plane of existence. If I’m spared (as people used to say), I hope to do something special for my 60th…

Thanks, Daniel. I remember meeting you and I hope you are well.

Leila, great to hear from you. What kind of special? Well, in 1997 my wife gave me an IOU for my birthday. The promise was “My great Baha’i adventure”. We were going to go to Mongolia or somewhere like that. And then I got elected as Secretary of the UK NSA, and that became my great Baha’i adventure. Not quite what I had expected, but adventurous in its own way.

I’m not sure what I would like to do for my 60th birthday. No doubt my (adult) children will have some ideas. My daughter has mentioned long-distance horse-riding. I spent much of my childhood and teens on horse-back, so that might be something special, to get back on a horse.

Or a trip round the world? I’d love to go to New Zealand and Australia.

The reality is, I don’t know what I’d like to do. Have a huge party, perhaps. Well, I could do that as well as other things.

Let’s see what Baha’u'llah has in mind…

See you shortly in Haifa!

Hi Barney,

I’m well, still working in the PR field, and finishing my studies, i’m now trainee lawyer.

We had the chance to see Dan few weeks ago in Paris. Hope to meet you again soon.
