How long’s this heat going on?
Thursday 20 July, 2006 London yesterday was almost unbearable. I’ve been working at home today, where it’s been slightly cooler but more humid. Even now, at almost 11.20 p.m. the temperature is in the mid-twenties. London tomorrow - gasp!

Dining in Welwyn
If you’re looking for a really good place to eat in Welwyn (no, not Welwyn Garden City - whenever I say I live in Welwyn, my interlocutor inevitable exclaims, ‘Oh, Welwyn Garden City’; I grind my teeth and tell them, ‘No, Old Welwyn’ - which is not exactly true, ‘cos I live in Oaklands), I can highly recommend the Wellington. It’s an inn with its origins in the 14th century. It’s been carefully restored, and the food is excellent.
Erica and I had a slightly belated 36th wedding anniversary dinner there tonight, sitting in the balmy evening air at one of the outdoor tables, indulging ourselves with lovely food.
We chose a table next to a mirror on which the specials menu was written. People kept coming up and looking, I thought, at us. They’d apologize and explain they weren’t looking at us but at the menu on the mirror. Next time, we’ll choose another table. But we’ll definitely go there again and, if we’re feeling particularly generous, take our friends.
